E-MOTIONS

Emotion according to wikipedia, is “a mental and physiological state associated with a wide variety of feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. It is a prime determinant of the sense of subjective well-being and appears to play a central role in many human activities.” Emotions are powerful and hence, there’s a need to manage them well. If emotions are not well managed, they could mess up one’s dreams and relationships.
Some people are extremely emotional, i.e. their actions are driven entirely by how they feel. One thing i’ll like to say about your emotions is that they are yours and it is your responsibility to manage them. You cannot control what a person says to you but you can control your reaction to what is said to you. The choice is entirely yours, and i dare say we get better at gaining this mastery over our emotions by reason of use (regularly working on gaining control), also, we become effective and experience an empowering freedom. This is a state which every leader or would-be leader should aspire to get to.

A good example of an emotion is anger. The bible gives an allowance for anger but makes us know that we should not act out of anger. I know people who have lost major relationships because of words spoken in anger.

Today, we’ll start by taking a look at some of the functions/roles of emotions. Here goes:

1) Survival

Our emotions have the potential to serve us today as a delicate and sophisticated internal guidance system. Our emotions alert us when natural human need is not being met. For example, when we feel lonely, our need for connection with other people is unmet. When we feel afraid, our need for safety is unmet. When we feel rejected, it is our need for acceptance which is unmet.

2) Decision Making

Our emotions are a valuable source of information. Our emotions help us make decisions because in cases which require empathizing with people, we judge fairly and equitably. On the other hand, one’s emotions can cloud one’s sense of judgement by causing bias. So a balance is key.
