At the end of the last academic session, based on prior deals we had made with the children about their results, they got some cash reward. Before they went ahead to start ordering for whatever they liked, their Dad advised that they invest some. They Did.
This holiday, their Dad mentioned to me casually that our daughter had loaned out her cash to a friend who needed it for business and would pay back. I was livid! I accosted her straight and asked why she did that without checking with us. I was thinking, “what does this girl know”? “what business is the friend doing”? “what if she doesn’t get the money back”? Her response was it for me. She looked at me funny and asked if she needed to check with me for that one again since it was now her money. As the African mother, I unashamedly said Yes! But I didn’t push further sha…….I got the cue that “it have do”
This morning after my bible study, I had some time to pray and listen. Then from nowhere, that scenario played back to me again. I knew that since the money had been given to her, she didn’t “have to” ask before doing whatever she wanted with it. It would be great if she did. Then I saw that I was clearly overbearing as far as that issue was concerned.
My Daughter is grown. I need to live with that. The roles have changed quite a bit. Now is the time when the work done over the past several years is being put to the test. Now, just like the holy spirit, I pray for her and be there as a friend, counselor and guide, with plenty of love for her.
It flooded my heart afresh how amazing God is. He loves us, yet He doesn’t force His way on us. He nudges us, even though sometimes we either don’t hear because of our own agenda or we ignore Him. Then when the deed is done, the lesson would’ve been much better learnt than if He had insisted on what we should do. Over and over, we make mistakes and He loves us. We run back, and He receives us in love. He still doesn’t hold back instructions to us constantly. When we disobey, we learn. When we obey, we GROW! These things are easier to process mentally, but this one got me!
If we look a little deeper, we will see how God uses the different stages of life, events and relationships to reinforce what His word says. God loves us so much and His word is sweet; when it comes alive to and in us. May God’s word not be far from you, may you have the listening ear and courage to obey.
